Is PQC enabled? — quick check
App version check (any platform)
# Signal: Settings → Help → Version
# WhatsApp: Settings → Help → App info
# iMessage: Settings → General → About → Software Version Expected when PQC is ON
Signal 6.47+ / WhatsApp 24.10+ / iOS 17.4+
PQXDH (Signal/WhatsApp) or PQ3 (iMessage) active for new chats. What you'll see when PQC is OFF
Signal 6.46 / WhatsApp 24.9 / iOS 17.3
Initial key agreement is classical X3DH only. These apps don't expose a per-chat PQ indicator. The version on both ends is the authoritative answer.
WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption is the Signal protocol, so it inherited PQXDH when Meta rolled out Signal's 2023 spec to WhatsApp clients during 2024. New conversations get a Kyber-1024 hybrid initial key agreement.
Required versions
The PQXDH rollout completed in WhatsApp for iOS 24.10+, Android 2.24.10+, and Desktop 2.2410+. Anything from 2025 onwards has it.
Verify
- App version: Settings → Help → App info.
- WhatsApp does not expose a per-chat PQ indicator. Tapping the contact then Encryption shows the QR code / 60-digit safety number — comparing it confirms the session is end-to-end encrypted, but not which KEM was used. Trust the version number.
Caveats
- WhatsApp Backups to iCloud / Google Drive are encrypted with a key derived from your passphrase or hardware-backed key — that wrap is currently classical AES-GCM only, not PQ.
- WhatsApp Web sessions linked before the PQXDH rollout keep using their original session keys until you re-link the device.
